Secunda, Brant

Secunda, Brant
Founder of the Dance of the Deer Center for Shamanic Studies and apprentice to the Huichol shaman Don José Matsuwa. Secunda promotes Huichol shamanism in seminars, vision quests, and pilgrimages worldwide, with all profits allegedly going to the Huichol themselves. However, scholars including Jay Fikes have drawn attention to the negative impact of this spiritual tourism, including the disruption of Huichol communities by New Age consumers and the misrepresentation of Huichol “shamanism” (its character dependent on the ethnographer at issue) such as Secunda’s inappropriate use of the term vision quest.
