(1919– )
A Daur Mongol who is the manager of the Mongolia and Inner Asia Studies Unit at Cambridge University. His collaboration with Caroline Humphrey in recording and discussing his people’s changing culture, in which shamans and elders led clans in particular ways, is among the most important recent studies of shamanism. It is one of the few studies that interprets shamans not only in a religious frame but also, more significantly, in a political and social one.
